Private Jet Travel: Why It's Greener Than You Think
Private jet travel always had a stigma attached to it when it comes to the environment and global warming. Some people believe that private jets cause unnecessary damage to the planet, however, private jet travel is less harmful than what the public believes. Private jets are not the problem, even though it’s popular to blame them.
The private jet industry has been very conscious about going greener. Many companies are converting to more sustainable fuel alternatives and carbon offset programs. In fact, according to NBAA, The whole industry had a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2005. People also overlook and down-play the environmental effect of mass tourism and large commercial flights. For example, a six-hour round trip on a commercial airliner emits 149 tonnes of CO2. Comparably, the same rough trip flight on a Citation X emits 12.5 tonnes of CO2. The commercial airliner has over ten times the amount of carbon emission than the private jet. Also, private jet travel is more efficient, meaning less wait time ground and delays, cutting on the ground emissions tremendously.
The general public’s bashing of private jet travel is more fun than factual. Studies have shown that private jets do not have as much of a harmful effect on the environment as people believe. The entire industry is very mindful of their carbon footprint and is always searching for “greener” alternatives. The commercial airline industry should be scrutinized as well since commercial aircraft emit over ten times the amount of carbon emissions than a private jet. Unfortunately, people care more about headlines and drama than facts.
